22-24 August 2025 – Orientation to Cave Rescue

Trip report by Jason Jakary

NCRC OCR this past weekend, based out of the Great Saltpeter Cave Preserve in KY.

Friday 8/22: 0600-1800

  • Drive out to Mt Vernon, KY area and set up camp at GSP

Saturday 8/23: 0800-1700

  • Classroom lectures
  • Litter packing and movement practice above ground

Sunday 8/24: 0800-1500

  • In-cave mock rescue; the cave used was Climax Cave, not GSP
  • Three mock patients: Lost but able to walk out with assistance, hypothermic that developed anaphylactic shock once fed food and had to be carried out partially, and unresponsive that needed to be carried out the whole way
Sunday 8/24: 1530-1800
  • Myself, along with three members of the Greater Cincinnati Grotto explored a small local cave utilizing SRT

Monday 8/25: 0600-1800

  • Return drive back to KC
Overall a fantastic experience, I was able to befriend a ton of cavers from all over the NCRC Central Region and we’re trying to plan future caving trips. I’d like to attend an NCRC L1 course, but from what I hear they’re few and far between, and registration fills up incredibly fast.
