15 October 2022 Bridge Day

2022 Bridge Day Trip Report by Bill Gee

After two years (2020 and 2021) of being canceled, the annual Bridge Day (Wikipedia link) event was restarted for 2022. The event this year was on 15 October. It is always held on the third Saturday in October.

I attended Bridge Day in 2011 as a participant. In 2019 I was on the rappel safety team, and for 2022 I was again on the rappel safety team.  More information about the rappel is at Bridge Day rappel.

It is a long drive from Kansas City to Fayetteville, read more

28 September 2022 – Stark Caverns Photo

28 September 2022 – Stark Caverns Photo Project

Some years ago when we started the survey project at Stark Caverns, there was some discussion of also producing a book of photos to be sold in the gift shop. Now that the survey project is winding down, it is time to start work on the photos that might be included in a coffee table book.

Originally there were four people signed up for this trip. At the very last minute two of them had to drop out. One was sick with the flu and the other tested read more

2022 NSS Convention

2022 NSS Convention trip report by Bill Gee

The 2022 NSS Convention was held at the Central States Fairground in Rapid City, South Dakota June 13 through 17. I have attended several conventions in the past. The last two years (2020 and 2021) were held on-line only due to the Covid pandemic.

I left for the convention several days early so I could spend some time visiting friends in central Nebraska where I grew up. From there I drove across the Sandhills area of Nebraska. There are miles and miles read more

2010-2016 Meeting Minutes

This post collects links to ZIP files containing business meeting minutes from 2010 through 2016.  Each year is a single ZIP file containing PDF files of the approved minutes.

To use these files, download the ZIP and the expand to a temporary directory.  Each ZIP will create a directory for the year which will contain the files.

The files for 2016 may look a bit odd with blank pages at the end.  I had to strip a bunch of cave map images from those files in order to get them down to read more

2021 August TAG Trip

TAG Trip Report – August 4 through 8, 2021

Go to the bottom of this post to see photos from the trip.

Several months ago I heard some interest from a few KCAG members about getting more experience with vertical gear in some deeper pits. I searched around a bit and decided to set up a trip to some of the classic SCCi (Southeast Cave Conservancy Inc.) pits in the TAG area. The chosen pits were Neversink, Valhalla and South Pittsburgh Pit.

I scheduled the trip for early August 2021. The plan was read more

Cave Light Comparison Testing Presentation and Data Files

At the regular grotto meeting of 16 March 2021 I gave a presentation comparing various kinds of cave lights. This post has links to the presentation file and to the data files that I collected.

The data files are plain text, comma-separated values. They can be imported to any spreadsheet or graphing program. I used https://labplot.kde.org/ to create the graphs in the slide show.

The first column in the data files is elapsed time in seconds. The second column is the brightness in lux.

The file names read more
